The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has praised the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming Sunday Udeh Okoye as its National Secretary. The party described the decision as a victory for democracy and party supremacy.
Judgment Strengthens Party Autonomy
In a statement on Thursday, PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) emphasized that leadership issues within political parties should remain internal matters. National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba noted that the ruling confirms Okoye’s nomination followed due process, as outlined in the party’s constitution.

This decision resolves any disputes over the position. It reinforces the principle that political organizations should govern their affairs without external interference.
Due Process in Okoye’s Appointment
Okoye emerged after Senator Samuel Anyanwu became the party’s governorship candidate for the November 2023 Imo State election. To fill the vacant position, the NWC directed the South East Zonal Executive Committee to nominate a replacement.
On October 20, 2023, the committee unanimously approved Okoye’s nomination. The NWC then ratified his appointment on November 7, 2023. The Board of Trustees (BoT), the South East Zonal Caucus, and the PDP Governors’ Forum later endorsed the decision.
The party formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public about the appointment.
PDP Calls for Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections
PDP commended the Supreme Court for upholding party autonomy. The ruling, according to the party, strengthens internal democracy and reinforces confidence in its leadership structure.
“This judgment is a strong affirmation of party supremacy and internal decision-making,” the statement read.
The NWC urged all members to remain united and work together to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
