The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, warning that the move could destabilize the region and serve as a prelude to suppressing democracy in the South-South ahead of the 2027 elections.
At a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the decision as unnecessary and politically driven.
“Rivers State was not in crisis when this declaration was made. The President’s actions are now causing instability rather than resolving any issue,” Ologunagba stated.
The PDP also rejected the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, calling it unconstitutional and an attack on Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
PDP: Tinubu Lacks Authority to Remove a Governor
Ologunagba insisted that no constitutional provision empowers the President to suspend an elected governor. Citing sections of the 1999 Constitution, he accused Tinubu of attempting to impose an autocratic rule.
“The sovereignty of the people is exercised through their elected representatives. The President cannot override this sovereignty under any guise,” he asserted.
The party also accused Tinubu of bypassing due process by failing to seek National Assembly approval before enforcing the emergency rule.
“The Constitution requires legislative approval before a state of emergency takes effect. This unilateral action is a clear violation of that process,” Ologunagba added.
Call for Legislative and Military Neutrality
The PDP urged the National Assembly to reject the emergency declaration and instructed its lawmakers to oppose the move.
Meanwhile, the party called on the military and security agencies to remain neutral, warning against being used as political tools.
“The military must resist any attempt to interfere in the governance of Rivers State. Their duty is to protect democracy, not undermine it,” Ologunagba cautioned.
‘Wike’s Role Overlooked’
PDP South-South Caretaker Committee Chairman, Emma Ogidi, accused Tinubu of shielding Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, from scrutiny despite his alleged role in the Rivers crisis.
“Why is the governor being blamed while the FCT minister, who has openly made provocative statements, is ignored?” Ogidi questioned.
He warned that the emergency rule in Rivers State is part of a broader political strategy aimed at controlling the South-South ahead of the 2027 elections.
“This is not just about Rivers. This is a calculated move for 2027. Our governors must be vigilant,” he added.
The PDP reaffirmed its support for Governor Fubara, insisting that he remains the legitimate leader of Rivers State despite the federal government’s actions.
