The House of Representatives has denied claims that lawmakers received a $5,000 bribe to approve President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s State of Emergency request for Rivers State.

Deputy House Spokesman Hon. Philip Agbese (Benue, APC) dismissed the claims on Saturday, calling them false and malicious. He insisted lawmakers acted in the interest of peace and stability.

“The House approved the emergency purely out of patriotism,” Agbese said. “No financial inducement influenced our decision. We debated extensively before reaching a resolution.”

House Modifies Emergency Declaration

Before approving the emergency, lawmakers made key adjustments. The National Assembly assumed legislative duties in Rivers State during the period. They also ensured the emergency would not automatically last six months. If both parties resolve their differences sooner, the House urged the President to lift it immediately.

Agbese compared the decision to King Solomon’s wisdom in resolving disputes. He explained that the measure creates room for reconciliation while safeguarding democracy.

Bribery Claims Are Political Propaganda

Agbese blamed political opponents for spreading false bribery claims. He urged Nigerians to ignore distractions and trust that lawmakers prioritize national stability.

“Baseless accusations like this only serve to mislead the public,” he said. “The House remains independent and committed to democracy.”

He reassured Nigerians that President Tinubu, a known advocate for democracy, would not undermine democratic institutions.

The lawmaker also addressed concerns about quorum, confirming that 243 members were present when the House reached its decision.

“The process was transparent, and the numbers speak for themselves,” he added.

Agbese called on Nigerians to continue supporting the House, assuring them that lawmakers would always act in the public’s best interest. He expressed confidence that Rivers State would emerge stronger once the emergency period ends.
