Obasa Disputes Impeachment, Insists on Due Process as Lagos Assembly Speaker

Mudashiru Obasa Challenges Lawmakers, Alleges Procedural Breach in Impeachment Process

The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed claims of his removal by state lawmakers over alleged misconduct and abuse of office.

Addressing Lagos residents on Saturday, Obasa maintained that he remains the Speaker until proper constitutional procedures are followed for his removal.

According to Nairametrics, Obasa was reportedly impeached two weeks ago, with Mojisola Miranda of Apapa I State Constituency elected as the new Speaker. Obasa, first elected as Speaker in 2015, has faced accusations of financial impropriety from a self-proclaimed anti-corruption group.

Allegations Leading to Impeachment

The Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition alleged that the Assembly, under Obasa’s leadership, misappropriated N17 billion for the construction of a gate at the legislative complex. The group also claimed that N200 million was spent on the 22nd Thanksgiving service held for Assembly staff.

Reconvening last Monday, the lawmakers cited abuse of office and gross financial misconduct as reasons for Obasa’s impeachment.

Obasa’s Reaction

In his response on Saturday, Obasa described the allegations as “ridiculous and untrue,” insisting that due process was not followed in the impeachment proceedings.

“The speakership is not a personal title. If they don’t want me anymore, that is fine, but let the process be lawful. Breaking into the chamber and using a fake mace to carry out the removal is unacceptable,” Obasa stated.

He further accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of deploying over 200 officers to the Assembly complex and his private residence in Agege on the day of his alleged removal.

Assembly’s Stand

Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. Similarly, Assembly spokesperson Hon. Stephen Ogundipe refuted claims of financial misappropriation, emphasizing the Assembly’s commitment to integrity and transparency.

Ogundipe stated, “The Lagos State House of Assembly does not embark on constituency projects or handle such funds. Allegations like these must be properly investigated before tarnishing the image of a reputable institution.”

Miranda’s Agenda

Following her appointment as the new Speaker, Mojisola Miranda pledged to work towards achieving a “Greater Lagos” through inclusive and collaborative legislation. She also paid a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasizing her vision for improved governance.
