The Afenifere Youth Renewal Group (AYRG) has raised concerns over an alleged plot by certain vested interests within the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to obstruct the supply of crude oil to local refineries. The group warns that this move could trigger fuel scarcity, drive up pump prices, and worsen economic hardship for millions of Nigerians.
Letter to Tinubu: A Call for Urgent Action
In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, signed by AYRG President Chief Semiu Oriade and Secretary-General Otunba Opeoluwa Ayeola, the group expressed fears that these alleged actions could erase the economic progress made under the current administration.
“This insidious plot, if not urgently curtailed, has the potential to erode the significant economic gains recorded under your leadership and plunge Nigeria back into the dark era of crippling fuel importation,” the letter read.
Commendation for Fuel Subsidy Removal
The group lauded Tinubu’s administration for removing the fuel subsidy, describing it as a decisive move that freed Nigeria’s economy from the grip of corrupt oil cartels. However, they cautioned that certain individuals within the NNPC are allegedly conspiring to undermine these reforms by cutting crude supply to refineries.
A Threat to Nigeria’s Energy Independence
AYRG described the alleged move as an “economic crime” and a “direct assault” on Nigeria’s sovereignty as an oil-producing nation. The group argued that while Tinubu’s policies aim to boost local refining, these vested interests want to force Nigeria back into fuel importation for their own financial gain.
AYRG’s Demands to the President
The group urged Tinubu to take immediate and decisive action, including:
Launching an investigation into the activities of the NNPC.
Ensuring a steady supply of crude oil to local refineries.
Engaging stakeholders in the oil and gas sector.
Keeping the public informed on measures being taken to prevent economic sabotage.
Warning Against Economic Hardship
AYRG emphasized that failure to act swiftly could lead to skyrocketing fuel prices, hyperinflation, and widespread suffering among Nigerians. They stressed that preserving local refining operations is critical to ensuring Nigeria’s energy security and economic stability.
Their warning comes amid rising concerns over disruptions in fuel supply and the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s refining capacity to reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
