Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has dismissed the political influence of ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai ahead of the 2027 elections, asserting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) remains the dominant force in Kaduna State.

Speaking on Channels TV, Sani described El-Rufai’s recent defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as inconsequential, arguing that it only strengthens APC’s chances in the upcoming presidential, state, and National Assembly elections.

“Well, I know these are some of his antics, and for us, we will not say anything. But we will lay the cards down and see what happens in the next election. Only God knows what will happen tomorrow,” Sani said.

He expressed confidence that APC would emerge victorious in Kaduna, emphasizing that El-Rufai’s departure does not pose a threat to the party’s electoral prospects.

El-Rufai’s Role in Opposition Questioned

While acknowledging the importance of a strong opposition, Sani questioned El-Rufai’s moral standing to lead one. He warned the SDP against embracing politicians who could disrupt internal democracy with divisive tactics.

“If the opposition sees him as a moral figure to rally behind, well, good luck to them. But I believe that aligning with such elements will lead nowhere. The SDP will soon realize this, it’s just a matter of time,” he added.

Calls for a Stronger Opposition

Despite his criticism of El-Rufai, Sani stressed the need for a vibrant opposition to hold those in power accountable. He noted that democracy thrives when the ruling party faces legitimate scrutiny and competition.

“We need a strong and effective opposition that challenges the government and keeps it on its toes. However, an opposition built on sentiment rather than real political strength will not succeed,” Sani remarked.

APC Unshaken in Kaduna Politics

Reaffirming his stance, Sani maintained that APC remains in control of Kaduna politics and is well-positioned for victory in 2027. He dismissed any speculation that El-Rufai’s defection could shift the political landscape in the state.

“With or without him, as far as I’m concerned, he is politically irrelevant in our state, and we’re going to win the next election,” Sani concluded.
