A few weeks ago, Primate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, made a bold prediction: the All Progressives Congress (APC) would crumble, and the collapse would begin in Lagos State.
At the time, such a prophecy seemed far-fetched. Lagos is considered the bedrock of APC, a state deeply tied to the party’s foundation and structure. More importantly, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the party’s ultimate leader, wields immense influence in Lagos, making it nearly unthinkable that APC’s downfall could begin there.
However, Ayodele’s words were striking:
“APC will break, and it will start from Lagos. The party will be beyond recognition as those holding it together will decide to let go because the pressure will be too much.”
“There will be another movement coming out of APC, and this will start from Lagos State. President Tinubu will lose his grip on the party in Lagos, and nationally, it will be a major problem for him. If care isn’t taken, this will affect his chances in 2027.”
While many dismissed these statements as improbable, recent political turmoil in Lagos suggests otherwise.
Lagos APC in Disarray
The state chapter of the party is currently facing an internal crisis, with the most glaring issue being the power struggle within the Lagos State House of Assembly. The unexpected impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has thrown the party into disarray.
Meetings upon meetings have been held, yet there seems to be no resolution. Tensions escalated further when Obasa, defying his removal, stormed the Assembly complex, took over the Speaker’s office, and insisted he remains in charge.
With at least 36 lawmakers expressing frustration and demanding intervention from party leaders, a sense of confusion and discontent is spreading. Many accuse the leadership of staying silent in the face of the escalating crisis.
A Party Struggling to Hold Itself Together?
APC has long prided itself on unity, particularly in Lagos, where it has maintained an unshaken grip on power. However, the unfolding drama raises critical questions:
Has the party underestimated internal discontent?
Are the accusations of betrayal and disloyalty within Lagos APC signaling a deeper crisis?
Could Primate Ayodele’s prediction of APC’s downfall from Lagos actually come to pass?
As events continue to unfold, one thing is clear: APC’s stronghold in Lagos is facing a serious test, and its ability to manage this crisis will determine whether it emerges stronger, or begins to unravel from within.
