Former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has taken legal action against the Assembly and its new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. He filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, challenging his removal from office.
Claims His Removal Was Illegal
Obasa argues that his impeachment on January 13, 2025, was unlawful. He claims 36 lawmakers removed him while the Assembly was in recess and while he was outside the country. His case, filed on February 12, 2025, by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), is yet to be assigned to a judge.
Calls for Urgent Hearing
He is asking the court for an expedited hearing. He also wants the court to shorten the response time for the defendants to seven days and limit his reply time to three days.
Disputes Assembly’s Process
Obasa questions the legality of lawmakers meeting and making decisions during recess without his approval. He insists that such actions violate the rules governing the Assembly.
Meranda Takes Over as Speaker
Following his removal, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female Speaker in Lagos Assembly history.
Alleges Police Interference
Obasa, who returned to Lagos on January 25, was greeted by supporters at his GRA, Ikeja residence. He claims the Lagos State Commissioner of Police helped facilitate his removal. He alleges that over 200 police officers surrounded his homes in Agege and Ikeja, confining his family.
Denies Misconduct Allegations
Obasa insists that due process was not followed in his impeachment and denies all allegations against him. The court has not yet set a date for the hearing.
