The political landscape of the Lagos State House of Assembly has been upended once again, as Mudashiru Obasa reclaims his position as Speaker, leaving supporters of his short-lived successor, Mojisola Meranda, in turmoil.

Meranda Loyalists in Uncertain Territory

Obasa’s dramatic return, just weeks after being ousted, has sparked anxiety among lawmakers who backed Meranda, raising questions about their political future. For 49 days, they believed the Assembly had turned a new page, only for the tide to turn in a stunning reversal orchestrated by the powerful elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

APC Power Play Crushes Assembly’s Autonomy

Despite Obasa’s removal by a two-thirds majority, party heavyweights intervened, ensuring his reinstatement. Any illusion of autonomy within the Assembly has now been shattered, reinforcing the influence of external forces over legislative affairs.

Reconciliation or Mere Political Theatre?

A so-called reconciliation meeting following his return did little to mask the tension. Lawmakers who once opposed Obasa sat uneasily, their expressions betraying their discomfort. Meanwhile, the reinstated Speaker, arriving late to the meeting, sent a subtle but unmistakable message, he is back in control.

Power Moves and Looming Crisis

Observers believe Obasa’s next steps will determine how deeply the rift within the Assembly will grow. There are already signs of a shake-up, with reports suggesting he is working to bring back Olalekan Onafeko as Clerk, an appointment that could widen existing divisions.

Unresolved Lawsuit: A Political Time Bomb

Adding to the uncertainty, an unresolved lawsuit against the Assembly still looms, threatening to reignite the crisis at any moment. As for Meranda’s allies, the options are narrowing, some may seek reconciliation, while others risk being sidelined in the unfolding power struggle.

The Drama is Far from Over

While Obasa’s return has restored the previous order, the battle scars remain fresh. The Lagos Assembly may have settled into its old leadership, but the political drama is far from over.
