The All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its support behind President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, claiming that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s actions made the intervention necessary.

Fubara Accused of Undermining Democracy

In a statement, APC spokesperson Felix Morka outlined several alleged constitutional violations by Fubara, arguing that his governance style led to the extreme decision.

Morka accused the suspended governor of dismantling the democratic framework in Rivers State, particularly by demolishing the state’s House of Assembly. He argued that governing without a functional legislature effectively paralyzed governance.

“There cannot be a governor without a legislature and a judiciary,” Morka stated. “All three arms of government must coexist for a constitutionally recognized government to function.”

Unauthorized Spending and Legal Implications

Morka further alleged that Fubara’s unauthorized spending of state funds, without legislative approval, stripped him of constitutional protections.

Citing a Supreme Court ruling, he claimed that Rivers State had been without a legitimate government since the legislature was dismantled, making the state of emergency inevitable.

Tinubu’s Action a ‘Necessary Step’

Morka described President Tinubu’s intervention as a “necessary, constitutionally backed measure” aimed at safeguarding lives, restoring governance, and preventing further chaos in the state.

He praised the president’s decisive action, emphasizing that public safety must take precedence over political considerations.

Political Reactions and Uncertain Future

The declaration of a state of emergency has sparked heated debate, with political observers closely monitoring developments in Rivers State. Many are questioning what the next steps will be and how the crisis will unfold in the coming days.
