Amid growing political tension ahead of the 2027 elections, the Presidency has made it clear that President Bola Tinubu is not preoccupied with re-election efforts but is instead focused on improving the lives of Nigerians.
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, addressed these concerns in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday. He emphasized that the president’s primary goal is to implement policies that drive economic growth and stability.
“President Tinubu is not worried about the next election. He’s focused on ensuring shared prosperity for Nigerians,” Dare stated. “His main concern is how the reforms he has introduced will positively impact the economy.”
Rising Political Tensions and Opposition Moves
This statement comes at a time when the political landscape is shifting, with opposition figures strategizing for the next election. Notably, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has fueled speculation about a possible coalition to challenge Tinubu in 2027.
Despite these political developments, the Presidency insists that Tinubu remains committed to governance, not electioneering.
Economic Reforms and Promises of Growth
The administration highlighted several economic achievements, including:
Increased foreign reserves
Declining inflation
Rising exports and a drop in imports
Over $50 billion in foreign investment
Stabilizing commodity prices
Tinubu also reassured Nigerians that his administration is actively working to address economic hardships.
Tinubu Defends Fuel Subsidy Removal
During a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) on Friday, Tinubu defended his decision to remove fuel subsidies. He described it as a necessary step to prevent economic collapse.
“Yes, removing the fuel subsidy was tough, but it was a choice Nigeria had to face,” he said. “We are not going to bankrupt our country.”
He added that competition in the petroleum sector, improved agricultural output, and better market conditions are signs of recovery.
A Presidency Focused on the Present, Not 2027
As political alignments shift, the Presidency remains firm that Tinubu’s priority is governance. The administration insists that the president is focused on achieving economic stability and improving Nigerians’ welfare rather than engaging in election politics.
