The Lagos State House of Assembly has undergone another dramatic shift in leadership as Mojisola Meranda resigns from her position as Speaker, just seven weeks after assuming office. Her unexpected departure paves the way for Mudashiru Obasa’s reinstatement, reigniting political tensions in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Meranda Steps Down Amid Leadership Crisis

Meranda, who replaced Obasa in January following his impeachment over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, announced her resignation during Monday’s plenary session. Lawmakers commended her for fostering unity and stability within the Assembly during her brief tenure.

A fellow legislator praised Meranda’s political maturity, highlighting her decision to prioritize party loyalty and institutional stability over personal ambition. Another noted her ability to navigate the complexities of Lagos politics while upholding the values of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obasa Reinstated as Speaker

Following Meranda’s resignation, the House wasted no time in re-electing Obasa as Speaker. His return was facilitated by the nomination of former Majority Leader Noheem Adams, representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1.

Obasa, who first assumed the role in 2015, was controversially removed on January 13, 2025, after a two-thirds majority of lawmakers voted him out amid corruption allegations. His dramatic comeback on February 27, 2025, was marked by a heavy security presence at the Assembly Complex, as tensions remained high.

Deputy Chief Whip Also Resigns

The turmoil within the House deepened with the resignation of Deputy Chief Whip Okanlawon Sani, further highlighting the ongoing power struggle.

The crisis erupted after the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition accused Obasa of financial mismanagement, including allegations that the Assembly spent N17 billion on constructing a building gate and N200 million on a Thanksgiving service. Obasa has dismissed these claims as baseless and politically motivated.

With Obasa back at the helm, questions remain about the future stability of the Assembly and whether the controversy surrounding his tenure will resurface. Will his leadership bring order, or will the crisis escalate further? Only time will tell.
