Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not entertain any other presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, insisting that President Bola Tinubu must complete two terms in office to fully implement his economic reforms.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, the lawmaker representing Abia North and former Abia State governor dismissed the possibility of an Igbo presidency in 2027, stating that the focus should be on Tinubu’s re-election.
Igbo Presidency Can Wait
Kalu acknowledged the need for an Igbo president but stressed that 2027 is not the right time.
“I am not going to discuss anything about the Igbo presidency, but I still tell you there is a need for it,” Kalu said. “The Igbo must present an acceptable candidate to all Nigerians. No one zone can make a president. President Tinubu was not elected by the Yoruba alone. He was elected by all Nigerians.”
When asked about the right time for an Igbo presidency, Kalu sidestepped the question and instead reiterated his support for Tinubu’s second term.
APC Unites Behind Tinubu for 2027
Kalu emphasized that within the APC, Tinubu remains the only presidential candidate for the next election cycle.
“Well, in our party, we have only one presidential candidate now. And Tinubu has to do eight years. It’s a must. You can see the repairs he has done to the economy, and things are starting to pick up again. This president is not even doing politics. He has never told anybody he wants to run for election or not.
“But as a party, we have mandated him to run and given him a vote of confidence. The NEC has given him a vote of confidence, through a motion proposed by the Governor of Imo State and announced by Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who is the National Chairman of the party. So, things cannot just get better in one night,” he added.
Strong Party Endorsement for Tinubu
Kalu’s remarks reinforce the APC’s internal stance on the 2027 elections, signaling strong party backing for Tinubu’s continued leadership. His comments suggest that any opposition within the party will face significant hurdles in challenging Tinubu’s candidacy.
