A dramatic courtroom exchange unfolded on Monday as activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore fiercely contested the continued withholding of his passport, a move he insists is preventing him from reuniting with his family in the U.S. and undergoing medical check-ups.
Sowore, who remains on bail while facing a 16-count cybercrime charge, found himself locked in a heated debate with Justice Musa Liman and prosecutors. The charges, brought by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, accuse him of using his X (formerly Twitter) handle to allegedly refer to the IGP with derogatory names like “Illegal IGP.”
Tense Courtroom Battle
During Monday’s proceedings, Sowore’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshall, urged the court to temporarily release his client’s passport, assuring his return for trial in April. However, what should have been a routine request quickly turned into a fierce legal standoff.

Justice Liman questioned the credibility of Sowore’s travel documents, pointing out discrepancies in the affidavit and ticket details. Skeptical of the activist’s claims, the judge demanded additional proof, including a comprehensive medical report and a formal letter from his U.S.-based doctor.
Prosecution Fuels Controversy
The courtroom grew even more charged when police counsel, Ibrahim Mohammed, argued that an inquiry at Abuja airport suggested Sowore’s ticket was for Uganda, not the U.S. The claim sparked outrage, with Sowore dismissing it as absurd.
“Lagos has an airport code (LOS), and Washington Dulles Airport, my point of arrival, has an airport code (IAD). How could you believe this baseless claim?” Sowore fired back, his voice rising in defiance.
As tensions escalated, the activist made his stance clear: “For your information, I will not run away from my country.”
Court Demands More Evidence
Despite the impassioned defense, the court remained unconvinced, demanding additional documentation before reconsidering his request. Frustration hung heavy in the air as Sowore voiced his disappointment: “If I cannot get justice from the court, then the court might as well throw me into jail.”
With neither side backing down, Justice Liman adjourned the case to Tuesday, March 4, 2025, leaving Sowore’s fate in limbo as he continues his fight for freedom of movement amid an intensifying legal battle.
