Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf of Kano State has approved a substantial sum of ₦15,667,634,645.10 for the settlement of outstanding severance allowances and gratuities owed to the last set of All Progressives Congress (APC) councillors. These councillors served under former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for eight years without receiving their entitlements.

The unprecedented gesture by Governor Yusuf to clear this huge debt, ignored by the previous APC-led administration, highlights the spirit of politics without bitterness championed by the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State.

The payment decision was part of the resolutions reached during the 27th Executive Council Meeting of the Kano State Government. The meeting, presided over by Governor Yusuf, was held on Tuesday at the new Governor’s House in Kwankwasiyya City.

This move aligns with the people-first philosophy of Governor Yusuf’s administration. Within less than two years in office, his government has paid over ₦20 billion in outstanding benefits to retired and deceased workers. These payments form part of the ₦40 billion debt inherited from the eight-year Ganduje administration.

The Council also approved a total of ₦51,575,700,575.96 for the execution of major projects and programs designed to enhance good governance and improve the living standards of citizens across the state.

According to the leadership of the affected APC councillors, the prolonged neglect of over 3,000 grassroots community leaders significantly contributed to the party’s failure in the 2024 gubernatorial election.

Governor Abba Yusuf’s commitment to fairness and justice continues to boost his popularity among the masses. In contrast, former Governor Ganduje and his allies are increasingly seen as elitist and self-serving, further diminishing their public support in Kano State.
