With Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election fast approaching, political maneuvering is in full swing. Parties are positioning themselves for a shot at the country’s top seat. Among the 19 registered political parties, new alliances are forming, and political heavyweights are weighing their options.

SDP Attracts Presidential Hopefuls Ahead of 2027

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is emerging as a major force in the evolving political landscape. According to the party’s National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, at least seven presidential hopefuls have aligned with the SDP. He shared this in an interview on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a Channels Television program.

“We have eight presidential aspirants; it could be 10. Seven of them are on our platform,” said Agunloye, a former steel minister. He emphasized the party’s commitment to keeping these aspirants. “We can’t afford to lose any of them to other parties,” he added.

Peter Obi’s Loyalists Make Overtures to SDP

In a surprising revelation, Agunloye confirmed that Peter Obi’s loyalists had approached the SDP. They wanted to know if the party would accept him if he decided to switch from the Labour Party (LP).

“Obi’s people came to us and asked, ‘If Obi comes, would you take him?’ Of course, we told them, ‘Yes,’” Agunloye stated. However, he noted that Obi has not officially declared any intention to join. Despite this, some of his supporters are working to prepare the ground.

“Some of them are with us, saying they are laying the foundation,” he explained. “But they need to join the SDP. You can’t remain in the Labour Party and expect us to open our doors without committing to us.”

SDP Prepares for Any Political Outcome

Although speculation continues over Obi’s political future, the SDP remains focused. Agunloye stressed that the party is strengthening its platform, regardless of Obi’s decision.

“But Obi may or may not plan to come,” he said. “People strategize in different ways. Our priority is to build a strong party for the elections.”

With shifting political dynamics, all eyes are on how these developments will shape Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race.
