Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the reported threats against National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, after she shared her struggles with the country’s worsening economic crisis.

Raye’s viral video detailed how she could barely afford basic necessities while serving in Lagos State, highlighting the financial strain on corps members and the general populace. However, her outcry was met with hostility from NYSC officials, who allegedly ordered her to delete the video and summoned her to appear before a disciplinary panel.

      Calls for Engagement, Not Intimidation

Reacting to the incident, Obi criticized the suppression of free speech and urged the government to engage with citizens rather than silence them. He described the reported threats against Raye as a disturbing trend of stifling dissent.

“This pattern is not new. I, too, have faced threats and harassment simply for offering constructive criticism of government policies,” Obi stated.

He emphasized that rather than punishing citizens for speaking up, the government should use their feedback to address pressing national issues.

      Constructive Criticism Key to Progress

Obi urged the administration to reflect on its approach to governance and recognize that open dialogue fosters national progress. He stressed that constructive criticism should not be seen as an attack but as a tool for improvement.

“A just and prosperous Nigeria should be one where people like Raye are encouraged to speak about their struggles while the government takes urgent action to address them,” he said.

Obi called on Nigerians to stand firm against intimidation, support one another, and continue advocating for a nation where leadership remains accountable to the people.
