A Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has come under fire after openly criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration in a viral TikTok video.
In the video, shared on her #talktoraye account on Saturday, Raye expressed frustration over Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic conditions. She labeled Tinubu a “terrible leader” and questioned his government’s commitment to easing citizens’ struggles.
Following the video’s circulation, Raye claimed that NYSC officials ordered her to take it down, alleging that she had also received threats over her remarks. The incident has since sparked conversations on free speech and youth activism in Nigeria.
Atiku Applauds Raye’s Courage
Reacting to the controversy, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar took to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday to express his support for Raye, describing her as a courageous voice in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
“I deeply admire her boldness and wisdom—her fearless resolve to speak truth to power, undeterred by the weight of opposition,” Atiku wrote.
Atiku likened Raye to notable female activists like Gambo Sawaba, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, and Margaret Ekpo, who played key roles in Nigeria’s political history. He emphasized that young voices like Raye’s are essential in shaping the nation’s future.
Call for Support Instead of Hostility
Urging Nigerians to rally behind Raye rather than condemn her, Atiku stressed the importance of encouraging youth engagement in governance.
“Rather than being met with hostility, Raye deserves encouragement and support. She is a shining emblem of the Nigerian youth, a testament to the long-held promise that the leaders of tomorrow are already among us, ready to shape a better future,” he added.
