In response to recent coordinated assaults by Boko Haram and ISWAP on military bases in Borno State, the Northern Patriots for Security and Development (NPSD) has demanded Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar’s immediate resignation. They accuse him of failing to provide effective leadership for the armed forces.

Allegations of Political Ambitions and Inadequate Military Support

NPSD President, Alhaji Mansur Ibrahim Dantani, released a statement in Kano on Tuesday evening. He expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the North-East. He attributed this to the Defence Minister’s lack of strategic direction and his alleged political ambitions.

Failure in Military Leadership and Resources

“The recent attacks on military formations in Marte, Dikwa, Rann, and Gajiram within a 24-hour period resulted in the loss of gallant soldiers and military equipment,” Dantani said. “This shows a glaring failure in leadership at the highest levels of our defence architecture.”

He also claimed that Badaru focuses more on positioning himself for the 2027 presidential elections than on addressing the nation’s pressing security challenges.

“It is disheartening to note that while our troops sacrifice their lives, the Defence Minister seems more focused on political maneuverings to advance his presidential aspirations. This diversion harms our national security,” he added.

Furthermore, the NPSD highlighted issues related to inadequate funding and resource allocation for the military. Despite budgetary provisions, the armed forces continue to struggle with insufficient equipment and logistical support.

“Our investigations reveal that the Ministry of Defence failed to ensure the timely release and proper use of funds for military operations. This has left our troops vulnerable and ill-equipped to confront insurgents effectively,” Dantani emphasized.

He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action. Dantani called on him to remove Badaru and appoint a more competent and focused individual to lead the Defence Ministry.

“The security of our nation cannot suffer due to personal political ambitions. We urge President Tinubu to prioritize the safety of Nigerians by appointing a Defence Minister committed solely to securing our country,” Dantani concluded.

The NPSD’s call comes amid growing public outcry over the resurgence of insurgent activities in the North-East. Many Nigerians have expressed frustration over the government’s handling of the security situation.

As the nation mourns its fallen soldiers, the demand for accountability and effective leadership in the defence sector continues to grow.
