…Jega to Oversee Presidential Livestock Reforms
In a strategic move to advance his Renewed Hope agenda, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega as Special Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms.
The announcement was made on Friday, March 7, by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle. Jega, a former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), previously co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee alongside Tinubu. The committee had proposed comprehensive reforms, including the establishment of a dedicated livestock ministry, which has since been created.
Jega, 68, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He currently serves as a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano. His latest appointment is expected to reinforce ongoing livestock sector reforms and contribute to national development efforts.
Jega’s Growing Influence in Education Governance
This appointment follows another key role handed to Jega by Tinubu. Recently, the president named him Chairman of the Governing Council of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), as part of a broader restructuring of governing councils across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Tinubu’s decision to approve 155 new governing council members for universities came amid threats of industrial action from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which had criticized the government’s delay in constituting these councils.
With Jega now playing a pivotal role in both education and agricultural reforms, his influence within the Tinubu administration appears to be growing. His new advisory position is expected to shape policies that could have a lasting impact on Nigeria’s livestock sector and economic development.
