The June 14th massacre in Benue State, which claimed the lives of over 200 innocent Nigerians, is yet another dark chapter in the long, bloody history of violence plaguing the Middle Belt. Reports attribute the attack to suspected armed Fulani herders — a recurring pattern of terror that has, for over a decade, haunted the region.
Rather than rising to the occasion with the urgency and empathy such a tragedy demands, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s response was not only tepid — it was deeply troubling. He urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to pursue dialogue and reconciliation with the perpetrators, placing the burden of peace on the shoulders of the victims rather than confronting the aggressors.
This stance, perceived by many as tone-deaf, has sparked outrage nationwide. Critics say it reveals a leader more concerned with maintaining political alliances and positioning for 2027 than addressing the genocidal violence consuming rural Nigeria.
A History of Bloodshed
The Benue killings are not isolated. On January 1, 2017, similar attacks claimed over 200 lives across various communities in the state. More recently, on Christmas Day 2024, armed herders struck again in the Mkomon district of Kwande Local Government Area, killing 11 people. According to local accounts, these attackers arrived during celebrations, opened fire indiscriminately, and razed homes.
In his recent statement, President Tinubu lamented, “The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing… Enough is now enough.” While he has directed security agencies to act, many citizens are skeptical — weary of years of hollow promises from successive governments that have failed to protect them.
Dr. Daudu Ayu, a community leader in Goma LGA, criticized the President’s framing of the crisis as “warring communities,” insisting that the violence is not mutual conflict but targeted aggression. “The Fulani Islamic terrorists are the aggressors,” he said. “Their goal is to annihilate indigenous communities and take over ancestral lands.”
A Government of Lamentations
Since 2009, Nigeria has lost more than 500,000 lives to insurgencies and communal violence. Benue State remains one of the worst-hit. Despite these staggering figures, the Federal Government’s strategy remains largely reactive — issuing statements, offering condolences, and urging peace after lives have been lost.
Many see this as deliberate negligence. President Tinubu’s silence on the deeper systemic issues — land encroachment, ethnic displacement, and impunity — is seen as part of a political calculation aimed at avoiding backlash from vested interests. His perceived tolerance for these killings, critics argue, is tied to his ambition for a second term in 2027.
Where is the Leadership?
In the face of this crisis, George Akume, a prominent Benue indigene and current Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has faced heavy criticism for his continued presence in a government seen as indifferent to his people’s plight. Calls for his resignation have grown louder, with many accusing him of choosing political preservation over standing with his people.
Benue has become a symbol of state failure — a place where mass graves are dug more often than roads are repaired. The question Nigerians are now asking is: how many more must die before action replaces rhetoric?
Time for Accountability
Nigeria is at a crossroads. The federal government can no longer afford to treat mass killings as mere security breaches or local disputes. These are acts of terror and must be confronted as such. The people of Benue — and Nigeria as a whole — deserve more than expressions of sorrow and calls for dialogue. They deserve justice, security, and peace.
Until decisive leadership emerges, one that prioritizes the sanctity of life above political interest, tragedies like these will continue. And history will not be kind to those who had the power to act but chose ambition over humanity.
