In a fresh twist to the leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly, impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has claimed that his successor, Mojisola Meranda, voluntarily stepped down from her position during a recent peace meeting.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Obasa stated that Meranda announced her resignation in the presence of party leaders during a meeting at Lagos House, Marina, over the weekend.
“There was a meeting in Marina attended by all party leaders and members. At that meeting, Meranda openly declared that she had stepped down and resigned,” Obasa said.
Security Aides Withdrawn Following Resignation
Obasa also dismissed speculations of political maneuvering behind the withdrawal of security aides assigned to the Speaker on the same morning he attempted to re-enter the Assembly complex. According to him, the withdrawal was a natural consequence of Meranda’s resignation.
“When someone resigns from office, the associated paraphernalia is taken away,” he explained.
Obasa Denies Resignation Claims
When asked about rumors that he had also resigned as part of the peace arrangement, Obasa challenged anyone to present proof of his resignation.
“Let them show my resignation letter. If I had resigned, would I still be here? You would no longer be addressing me as Speaker,” he insisted.
Obasa Declares Himself Speaker Amid Controversy
The controversy comes after Obasa stormed the Lagos Assembly complex on Thursday morning with heavy security, declared himself the legitimate Speaker, and presided over a plenary session attended by only four lawmakers.
