Tensions are rising in Zamfara State after Governor Dauda Lawal reportedly held a secret meeting with known bandit leaders in Gusau. The meeting has sparked fear among residents and drawn sharp criticism from security analysts and the public alike. Many say this strategy has failed in the past and only gives criminals room to regroup and attack again.

According to reliable sources, the meeting took place on Sunday at the Command Guest House in Gusau, the state capital. Governor Lawal met with top bandit commanders, including Wadalle, Ardo Nashawari, Na’eka, and others. They were led by Alhaji Tukur, the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), alongside several Fulani community members.

A source who attended the meeting said the Zamfara State Government arranged it under the guise of reconciliation. He added that members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards, dressed in military uniforms, escorted some of the bandits to the venue.

Security expert Alhaji Ahmed Bakare warned weeks ago that influential individuals in Nigeria are involved in Zamfara’s insecurity. He alleged that some people use mining operations to support the bandits terrorizing the state.

Another analyst, who declined to be named, said the bandits often trick the government. “Each time the military targets them, they offer to negotiate peace. Once they get funds, they disappear, re-arm, and return stronger,” he explained. He accused the governor of acting mainly when bandits threaten his personal gold mining interests.

Residents Lose Faith in Government’s Peace Approach

The meeting has fueled frustration and hopelessness among Zamfara residents. Many believe that such talks always lead to increased violence. One security analyst said, “People no longer trust the governor’s methods. They think these bandits have become part of his administration.”

Residents are also angry that the bandits left the meeting freely and returned to the forest without any consequences. They recalled past cases where the government honored bandit leaders with chieftaincy titles. In each case, violence worsened soon after.

As Zamfara continues to suffer from widespread attacks, many are demanding a clear, firm strategy to restore peace, not more negotiations with known killers.
