Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to prioritize resolving its internal challenges rather than attributing its struggles to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that for the PDP to become a formidable opposition, it must strengthen itself from within.
Self-Reflection Over Finger-Pointing
Speaking to journalists after the inauguration of the PDP South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee, Diri acknowledged concerns that the APC might be fueling divisions within opposition parties. However, he insisted that the PDP must take responsibility for its own stability and growth.
“We must turn our attention inward,” he said. “As the chairman of the Board of Trustees has pointed out, our priority should be fixing our own problems first. It’s easy to blame outsiders, but what about the issues within us?”
Strength Through Unity
Diri stressed that only a well-organized and united PDP can effectively compete with other political parties. He urged party members to focus on rebuilding and strengthening their internal structures.
“For me, I want the PDP to be competitive. We are the oldest political party in Nigeria, so we have no reason to keep accusing others. Once we resolve our internal challenges, we will emerge stronger,” he stated.
South-South PDP Leaders Stand Together
Describing the inauguration of the caretaker committee as a positive step, Diri highlighted the unity among South-South PDP leaders. He noted that four governors from the region are aligned in their commitment to revitalizing the party.
“Our zone remains the strongest PDP base, and we are united in this mission. If we continue to work together and show leadership, we will ensure the PDP remains a dominant force in the region,” he affirmed.
Caretaker Committee Tasked with Strengthening the Party
Governor Diri urged the newly inaugurated caretaker committee to focus on its mandate by addressing party issues in the zone. He emphasized that a strong, united PDP is crucial for its long-term success and stability.
