The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has pushed its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting from March 13 to May 15, 2025, citing the need for broader consultations and the conclusion of pending congresses at various levels.

In a statement signed by the PDP National Secretary, Sunday Okoye, the party explained that the decision followed extensive deliberations among key stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees (BoT), the PDP Governors’ Forum, and the PDP National Assembly Caucus.

Party’s Official Statement on the Postponement

“Following emerging issues, including the need to conclude our pending Zonal, State, L.G.A, and Ward Congresses, as well as to allow for further consultations to ensure a smooth NEC meeting, the NWC, after due consultation with leaders, stakeholders, and relevant organs of the party, has decided to shift the NEC meeting to Thursday, May 15, 2025,” the statement read.

Strategic Move Ahead of 2027 Elections

The postponement comes at a time when the PDP is navigating internal tensions and preparing its political strategy for the 2027 general elections. The party has been actively working to resolve disputes, reinforce its grassroots structures, and solidify its position as Nigeria’s primary opposition force.

Political analysts suggest that the rescheduling is a tactical move to ensure all party structures are properly aligned before key decisions are made at the NEC meeting.

Key Issues to be Addressed in May

The upcoming NEC meeting is expected to focus on several critical issues, including:

Leadership restructuring within the party

Electoral strategies for the 2027 elections

Possible alliances with other opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

PDP Assures Unity and Effective Decision-Making

The party reassured its NEC members that the decision to shift the meeting was in the best interest of the PDP and aimed at fostering unity.

“The NWC sincerely regrets any inconveniences this change of date may cause our distinguished NEC members,” the statement added.

With internal reorganization in full swing, all eyes are now on the PDP’s May 15 NEC meeting, which could significantly shape the party’s path ahead of the next general elections.
