The Civil Rights and Anti-Corruption Network (CRACON) has urged President Bola Tinubu to form a special investigative committee to probe Defence Minister Muhammed Abubakar Badaru, following allegations of abuse of office and conflict of interest.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by CRACON’s coordinator, Folashade Olumiya, the group emphasized the need for consistent action in the administration’s anti-corruption efforts. The group pointed out that if former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, was investigated for financial misconduct, the same scrutiny should be applied to Badaru.

“Consistency in the fight against corruption is key,” the statement read. “If a committee was set up to investigate Betta Edu, then the same should be done for Defence Minister Muhammed Badaru.”

Allegations of Conflict of Interest and Business Dealings

This demand comes after a petition by the Young Guardians of Accountability (YGA) accusing Badaru of violating federal laws by maintaining active business interests, including running a Bureau de Change, while serving in public office.

CRACON warned that ignoring the allegations could undermine public confidence in the government’s anti-corruption efforts.

“Failure to scrutinize the defence minister in the same manner as others accused of corruption will signal selectivity in the fight against corruption,” the statement continued. “We must ensure that no one is above the law.”

Concerns Over National Security Risks

In addition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), CRACON called for the creation of a presidential committee to oversee the investigation and guarantee transparency.

“The integrity of the Defence Ministry’s leadership is vital to national security,” Olumiya added. “If these allegations are substantiated, Badaru must step aside to facilitate an independent investigation.”

The group also raised concerns about the potential national security risks posed by Badaru’s alleged business dealings, urging immediate action to safeguard the country’s safety.

“Mr. Badaru’s involvement in private business while overseeing national defense could constitute a serious conflict of interest,” the statement warned. “The president must act decisively to demonstrate his administration’s genuine commitment to anti-corruption.”

CRACON concluded by calling on the president to reassure the public that his government remains committed to transparency and accountability.
