Eleven sailors have been reported missing after a cargo ship sank following a drone attack in the Black Sea off Bulgaria’s coast, adding to growing concerns over maritime security amid the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.
According to reports, the Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo vessel HS Dignity sank after the incident overnight. One crew member was rescued, while 11 others remained missing in the latest reports.
A second vessel, the Ukrainian-owned Chelsea 3, was also struck by drones in the same area. The ship, which was sailing under the Maltese flag, sustained damage, but all 15 crew members were rescued. Five reportedly received medical assistance.

The incidents have raised fresh concerns about the safety of commercial vessels operating in the Black Sea, a strategic waterway used for international trade and the transportation of agricultural commodities.
Bulgaria Raises Concerns Over Black Sea Security
The attacks have prompted concern in Bulgaria, which is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev condemned the incidents and indicated that Russia’s ambassador would be summoned over the matter.
However, responsibility for the attacks had not been conclusively established in the reports available at the time of publication.
The latest incident also comes amid continued hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with commercial shipping routes in and around the Black Sea facing persistent security risks.
The waterway remains strategically important to regional economies, particularly because of its role in transporting grain and other goods to international markets.
Further attacks on commercial vessels could disrupt maritime operations, increase insurance costs and deepen diplomatic tensions between countries in the region.
Reports Claim Putin’s Advisers May Be Misleading Him
Separately, reports concerning the Russian leadership have raised questions about the information President Vladimir Putin receives regarding the progress of the war.
Concerns have been expressed that some Russian military officials may be presenting an overly favourable picture of battlefield developments, potentially limiting the Kremlin’s understanding of the challenges facing its forces.
Similar allegations emerged earlier in the conflict. In 2022, Britain’s intelligence agency GCHQ said Putin’s advisers were afraid to tell him the truth about Russia’s military setbacks in Ukraine.
However, claims that the Russian president is being misled should be treated as attributed assessments rather than established facts about every member of his administration.
The allegations come as the war continues to place pressure on military operations, diplomatic relations and security across the wider Black Sea region.
Black Sea Remains a Strategic Flashpoint
The sinking of the HS Dignity and the damage to the Chelsea 3 highlight the risks faced by civilian shipping during the conflict.
The incidents could lead to renewed calls for stronger maritime monitoring and additional measures to protect commercial vessels operating near areas affected by the war.
For Bulgaria and other countries bordering the Black Sea, the developments also raise concerns about the potential for the conflict to create wider regional security challenges.
Investigations and further official statements are expected to be important in establishing responsibility for the attacks and determining whether additional security measures will follow.
