Apple Inc., the world’s most valuable company, announced its latest financial results on Thursday, reporting record-breaking figures that align with Wall Street’s expectations. However, the company faced challenges with iPhone sales and revenue from China falling short of forecasts.

Key Highlights:

Record Financial Performance: In the final quarter of 2024, Apple achieved a new high in both revenue and net income. The company reported earnings per share of $2.41, surpassing analyst predictions of $2.35, and total revenue of $124.3 billion, slightly above the anticipated $124.26 billion. These figures represent a significant milestone, exceeding previous records set in prior years.

iPhone Sales: Despite the successful launch of the AI-enabled iPhone 16, iPhone sales reached $69.1 billion, missing the projected $70.7 billion and marking a decline from the same period in 2023. This shortfall indicates challenges in the smartphone market, even with innovative product introductions.

China Market Performance: Apple’s revenue from China was $18.5 billion, below the expected $20.9 billion, representing an 11% decrease compared to the previous year. This decline underscores the competitive and economic challenges Apple faces in the Chinese market.

Services Division Growth: The company’s services sector, which includes offerings like the App Store, AppleCare, and Apple Music, generated a record $26.3 billion in revenue, reflecting a 14% year-over-year increase. This growth highlights the expanding role of services in Apple’s overall business strategy.

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, emphasized the positive impact of the company’s AI initiatives, stating, “In the markets where we launched Apple Intelligence, performance outpaced the markets where we did not.” This suggests a promising outlook for future iPhone sales as AI features become more widely available in key markets such as China and India.

Following the earnings announcement, Apple’s stock experienced a slight decline, dropping 0.7% prior to the report and continuing to decrease modestly in after-hours trading. Despite this, the stock remains up over 5% for the week, indicating investor confidence amidst market fluctuations.

These mixed results have prompted analysts to express concerns about Apple’s future performance. JPMorgan analysts, led by Samik Chatterjee, highlighted issues such as declining iPhone market share in China, limited adoption of AI features, and foreign exchange challenges due to a stronger U.S. dollar. China accounted for 17% of Apple’s revenue in the 2024 fiscal year ending in September, making it a critical market for the company’s growth prospects.

In summary, while Apple continues to achieve record financial milestones, it faces significant challenges in key product segments and markets. The company’s strategic focus on AI and services may play a crucial role in navigating these hurdles and sustaining its market leadership.
