Globacom emerged as the fastest-growing telecom operator in Nigeria’s Internet market in May, recording the highest increase in subscribers among the country’s major network providers, according to the latest data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The company added about 1.2 million new Internet subscribers during the month, accounting for nearly half of the 2.67 million increase recorded nationwide.
Nigeria’s total Internet subscriber base rose from about 154.3 million in April to approximately 157 million in May, while Globacom’s subscriber base increased from about 15.5 million to 16.8 million.
The NCC statistics also showed that Airtel Nigeria recorded the second-highest growth, adding about 1.07 million subscribers to reach 55.8 million in May, up from 54.8 million in April.
MTN Nigeria gained 382,894 subscribers, raising its total Internet subscriber base from about 83.1 million to approximately 83.5 million. T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, recorded no growth for the second consecutive month, maintaining an Internet subscriber base of 802,534 despite its national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria.
Industry sources attributed Globacom’s strong performance to its ongoing nationwide infrastructure renewal and expansion programme, which began last year.
The project involves deploying thousands of new base stations to extend network coverage to new locations and increase capacity in densely populated areas, with the aim of delivering superior voice and data services across the country.
The company is also expanding its fibre optic network and relocating infrastructure in areas affected by major road construction projects. In addition, Globacom has deployed thousands of 4G LTE sites across strategic cities and communities this year, significantly improving connectivity, expanding network reach and enhancing service quality for customers in both urban and rural locations.
The latest subscriber figures emphasizes the growing demand for Internet services in Nigeria and the increasing competition among mobile network operators. Globacom’s performance in May reflects the positive impact of its sustained investment in network infrastructure and its commitment to providing customers with reliable, high-quality data and voice services nationwide.
