A growing coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027 is gaining momentum, with multiple political parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), seeking to align with former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Obi: The ‘Beautiful Bride’ of Nigerian Politics
Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the leader of the Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives, revealed that discussions are underway to form a broad alliance ahead of the next election. In an interview with Sunday Sun, Ogene described Obi as the “beautiful bride” of Nigerian politics, attracting interest from both opposition parties and the APC itself.
According to Ogene, the current political climate is even more dire than during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was removed through a similar coalition in 2015. He accused Tinubu of consolidating power in a way that threatens Nigeria’s democracy, making opposition unity more crucial than ever.
“Nigeria is facing an existential threat,” Ogene stated. “If we needed a coalition in 2014 to remove Jonathan, the need is even greater now. Peter Obi is at the center of these discussions because Nigerians across all regions, religions, and age groups see him as a viable alternative.”
Can the Opposition Unseat Tinubu in 2027?
While the structure and composition of the emerging coalition remain unclear, Ogene hinted that the opposition is determined to present a formidable challenge to the APC in 2027. “Any team that wants to win must field its best eleven,” he said, emphasizing the need for fresh leadership with “youthful zest, dexterity, and global acceptability.”
As Nigeria inches closer to another crucial election, all eyes are on Peter Obi and the evolving political alliances that could reshape the country’s leadership.
