The Nigerian president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has strongly criticized former President Goodluck Jonathan and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka over their comments on President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State.

Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, dismissed their remarks as personal opinions, emphasizing that Tinubu acted within his constitutional authority.

Presidency Defends Tinubu’s Decision

Ajayi stressed that the president’s primary responsibility is to safeguard Nigeria’s stability and prevent any situation that could lead to nationwide unrest. According to him, Tinubu’s decision was not arbitrary but a necessary step to address the governance crisis in Rivers State.

“President Tinubu has a country to govern, and he has exercised his power under the 1999 Constitution as amended,” Ajayi stated. He further emphasized that ensuring law and order is a top priority for the administration.

Ajayi also cited the Supreme Court ruling, which reportedly found that Rivers State currently lacks a constitutionally recognized government. He argued that this legal precedent made the president’s intervention necessary to prevent a power vacuum and potential instability in the state.

Growing Reactions and Political Tensions

The presidency’s strong response has sparked further debate among political observers, with some questioning whether the State of Emergency was the best course of action. Critics argue that it could set a dangerous precedent for federal overreach into state affairs. However, supporters of the government insist that Tinubu’s actions were necessary to maintain stability and uphold constitutional order.

As reactions continue to pour in, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact governance in Rivers State and Nigeria’s broader political landscape. Meanwhile, the presidency maintains that Tinubu will not allow any situation that threatens national unity to escalate unchecked.
