Fubara, Pro-Wike Lawmakers in Crucial Talks Today Over Budget, Governance Issues

…Fubara seeks resolution as Rivers budget standoff escalates

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, is set to meet with the Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly today at the Government House in Port Harcourt to address pressing governance issues, including the state budget.

The meeting follows last week’s Supreme Court judgment, which has intensified political tensions in the state. In a letter dated March 7, 2025, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, formally invited the lawmakers, emphasizing the need to resolve key legislative concerns.

Key Issues on the Agenda

Among the topics on the agenda are:

Provision of a suitable venue for Assembly sittings

Settlement of outstanding allowances for lawmakers

Presentation of the state budget

Other pressing matters crucial to the state’s stability

Supreme Court Ruling Sparks Political Uncertainty

The Supreme Court judgment had fueled speculations about a possible impeachment move against Fubara after the reinstated lawmakers issued an ultimatum for the submission of the budget.

In response, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and its youth wing strongly warned against any attempt to remove the governor, who is the first riverine indigene to lead the state since 1999.

Fubara Seeks Resolution to Political Crisis

Fubara’s administration appears keen on preventing further political unrest by engaging directly with the lawmakers. Today’s meeting is expected to set the course for a resolution to the lingering crisis.

With the political landscape in Rivers State on edge, all eyes will be on the outcome of this high-stakes meeting.
