Access Bank PLC has achieved a major sustainability milestone, securing the IFC EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) Green Building Certification for its headquarters, Access Tower, in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The certification, backed by global partners including the UK and Japanese governments, highlights Access Bank’s commitment to environmental responsibility through reduced energy consumption, water efficiency, and low-carbon construction materials.

A Benchmark for Sustainability in Banking

Access Tower has recorded impressive sustainability achievements, including:

20% reduction in energy use

33% reduction in water consumption

99% reduction in embodied carbon in materials

The eco-friendly building incorporates features such as an insulated roof, high-performance glass, smart meters for energy tracking, and water-efficient fixtures. Additionally, retrofits, including flow regulators in faucets and showers, helped meet stringent EDGE water standards.

Gregory Jobome, Executive Director of Risk Management at Access Bank, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating:

“Our vision extends beyond banking; we are architects of change. This certification reinforces our commitment to responsible growth and a greener future for corporate Africa.”

A Global Push for Green Buildings

EDGE certification is a globally recognized standard developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to promote resource-efficient buildings. The program has certified over 100 million square meters worldwide, including more than 800,000 square meters of commercial and residential spaces in Nigeria.

IFC collaborates with governments, financial institutions, and developers to accelerate the adoption of sustainable building practices in emerging markets. By reducing operational costs and environmental impact, green buildings are becoming an essential part of future-focused urban development.

Access Bank: Leading the Way in Sustainable Finance

As one of Africa’s largest financial institutions, Access Bank has been at the forefront of integrating sustainability into its operations. With a presence in 24 countries and over 60 million customers, the bank continues to drive environmental and social impact through responsible banking practices.

This EDGE certification underscores Access Bank’s broader mission, aligning business success with global sustainability goals while setting new benchmarks for corporate environmental responsibility in Africa.
