The family of embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has rejected reports alleging he operated 10 bank accounts with N200 million, calling the claims baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement issued by Daniel Okpotu, Media Assistant to the Kyari family, they clarified that the former head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) only holds accounts in four banks, UBA, GTB, Sterling, and Access. The total balance across these accounts is reportedly less than N4 million.

Inactive Foreign Accounts and Alleged N200m Transactions

According to the family, Kyari’s foreign currency accounts, one in dollars and another in euros, have been inactive for 12 years, with no transactions recorded. They explained that the alleged N200 million figure represents cumulative deposits and withdrawals over 23 years, including his salaries, allowances, and other legitimate financial transactions.

Court Testimony Contradicts Allegations

During a court hearing on March 13, 2025, a prosecution witness reportedly testified that no funds in Kyari’s accounts were linked to criminal activity. The family accused certain individuals of orchestrating a smear campaign, reviving old accusations from three years ago to distort the ongoing asset declaration case.

“The claims that Kyari operated 10 accounts with N200 million are false and misleading. The truth, verifiable by any banker, is that he has only four active bank accounts, with a total balance of less than N4 million,” the statement read.

Family Urges Public to Disregard False Reports

The family urged Nigerians to ignore the misleading reports, emphasizing that Kyari has never held more than N5 million in any account in the past decade. As the case unfolds, it continues to generate public interest, raising questions about whether Kyari is receiving a fair trial or facing a media-driven prosecution.
