The Presidency has debunked reports circulating in several media outlets suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to visit the United States this week.
In a statement released on Monday, the Presidency described the viral claims as “false, baseless, and mischievous,” stressing that no such trip has been planned or announced by the Nigerian government. It said the fabricated report was part of attempts to discredit the Tinubu administration and mislead the public.
“There is no scheduled visit by Tinubu to the United States, nor any meeting with the U.S. Vice President as widely reported. Nigerians and the media are advised to disregard the misinformation,” the statement clarified.
The clarification follows earlier reports quoting Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to Tinubu on Policy and Communications, who said that the Nigerian leader and U.S. President Donald J. Trump were expected to meet in the coming days, either at the State House in Abuja or the White House in Washington.
According to Bwala, the proposed meeting would focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation in counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and regional stability.
“Both Tinubu and Trump share a firm commitment to combating terrorism and protecting humanity from violent extremism,” Bwala had said, noting that the Trump administration had previously provided significant military support to Nigeria.
He added that Tinubu has “built upon the foundations of that cooperation, ensuring tangible results in the fight against insurgency and cross-border terrorism.”
Bwala also hinted that both leaders might use their forthcoming engagement to address differing perceptions regarding religiously motivated attacks in Nigeria.
“As for the differences over whether terrorists in Nigeria target Christians specifically or attack people of all faiths, such issues, if any, will be discussed and harmonized when the two presidents meet,” he said.
However, the Presidency emphasized that while consultations between both governments continue on various fronts, no official date or venue has been fixed for any meeting between Tinubu and Trump. It urged Nigerians to rely only on verified information from official channels to avoid the spread of fake news.
