Billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote has announced plans to construct Nigeria’s largest seaport and a massive 6-million-metric-ton-per-year cement plant in Ogun State. The multi-billion-dollar investments mark Dangote’s renewed commitment to the state’s industrial development, following a shift in government policies that favor investors.
During a visit to Governor Dapo Abiodun in Abeokuta, Dangote praised Ogun’s investor-friendly climate, stating that his company was reviving its abandoned investment in the Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ).
“We had earlier abandoned our vision, but due to the state’s favorable policies, we are back. Plans are already in motion to build the country’s largest port,” he revealed.
Massive Cement Production Expansion
Dangote also disclosed that two new cement production lines with a combined capacity of 6 million metric tons per annum are being built in Itori. These will add to the 12-million-metric-ton plant in Ibeshe, making Ogun the highest cement-producing region in Africa with a total capacity of 18 million metric tons per year.
He emphasized that Nigeria has become self-sufficient in cement production, with the Obajana plant in Kogi State alone contributing 16.25 million metric tons annually, the largest in Africa. The country’s cement and fertilizer surplus are now being exported, generating much-needed foreign exchange.
Boosting Nigeria’s Industrial Growth
Dangote highlighted that his 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Ibeju-Lekki is already meeting Nigeria’s domestic demand for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), refined aviation fuel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). “Our goal is to make Nigeria self-sufficient in everything we consume,” he added.
Governor Abiodun welcomed Dangote’s return, describing it as a historic moment for Ogun State. He expressed gratitude for the company’s contributions to job creation and economic growth, noting that the state is proud to host Nigeria’s biggest cement production hub.
The governor also commended Dangote’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, particularly the ongoing construction of the Papalanto-Ilaro concrete road under the federal government’s tax credit scheme.
With these ambitious projects, Dangote Group is set to cement Ogun State’s position as Nigeria’s top industrial hub while significantly boosting the nation’s infrastructure and economic growth.
