In a bold step toward environmental sustainability, Nigerian Breweries Plc, in collaboration with the Ogun State Government, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and local stakeholders, is driving a large-scale reforestation effort in the Olokemeji Forest Reserve.
The initiative aligns with Nigerian Breweries’ commitment to restoring water-stressed ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience. The project, which began in March 2021, has already restored 292 hectares of land and planted 283,904 trees across 70 indigenous species, including the African Breadfruit (Ukwa) and Araba.
Unlike conventional reforestation efforts that rely on fast-growing exotic species, this project prioritizes native trees that support biodiversity, provide edible fruits, and enhance climate resilience.
Empowering Communities, Preserving Nature
Beyond tree planting, the initiative is transforming local livelihoods. More than 100 community members have been trained in sustainable farming, beekeeping, and conservation techniques, reducing dependence on deforestation-related income.
According to Sade Morgan, Corporate Affairs Director of Nigerian Breweries, the initiative ensures that environmental conservation goes hand in hand with economic sustainability.
“While logging licenses exist, due diligence must be ensured to protect conservation efforts. Nigerian Breweries is committed to working with authorities to balance economic activity with environmental preservation,” Morgan said.
Over 50 families have already benefited from the beekeeping program, which provides alternative income sources while promoting environmental stewardship.
A Life-Changing Impact
One of the project’s success stories is Taiwo, a former casual worker who, through support from Nigerian Breweries, is now studying Forestry at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). His journey exemplifies how corporate sustainability initiatives can drive real social impact.
As the next phase unfolds, Nigerian Breweries plans to expand reforestation efforts to cover 618 hectares, deepen community engagement, and secure more public-private partnerships for long-term sustainability.
The Olokemeji Forest Restoration Project stands as a testament to the power of corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship, proving that businesses can play a crucial role in shaping a greener future for Nigeria.
