Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has taken her battle with the Nigerian Senate and Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the global stage, seeking justice at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) session in New York.

Speaking at the Women in Parliament forum during the UN event, Natasha, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, called for international intervention, alleging that her suspension was politically motivated and aimed at silencing her.

Why Was Natasha Suspended?

The Senate suspended Natasha over alleged violations of standing rules, but she insists her suspension was an act of retaliation for speaking against injustice. In an emotional appeal, she expressed concerns for her safety, claiming she feared being detained in New York due to her decision to expose the issue globally.

A viral video shows Natasha breaking down in tears as she narrated her ordeal before the UN gathering.

The Feud With Akpabio

Before her suspension, Natasha clashed with Senate President Akpabio over a seating arrangement and later accused him of sexual harassment on national television. Her suspension followed soon after, escalating tensions within Nigeria’s political scene.

Her formal petition against Akpabio was initially rejected by the Senate Committee on Ethics, citing procedural issues. However, undeterred, she resubmitted it, reigniting public debate. Some Nigerians have called for an independent investigation, urging Akpabio to step aside to ensure fairness.

Akpabio’s Defense

Senate President Akpabio has categorically denied the sexual harassment allegations, stating that Natasha has made similar accusations against others in the past, which were dismissed.

A Political Firestorm

As the controversy unfolds, the case has sparked national and international interest, with political watchers anticipating potential fallout from Natasha’s move to involve global democratic institutions.

With both sides standing firm, the battle between Natasha and the Senate leadership is far from over. Will international pressure influence the Senate’s next move? Only time will tell.
