June 12th stands as a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s journey towards democratic governance. It is a day to celebrate the courage, resilience, and unwavering spirit of the Nigerian people. As we commemorate this significant milestone, we must both honor the progress made and recognize the pressing work that still lies ahead.
As a former presidential candidate, I, Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, salute every Nigerian for their continued commitment to democracy. Today, I urge us all to reaffirm our shared responsibility in building a nation that reflects the values of justice, equity, and progress for all.
One of the most commendable achievements of Nigeria’s democratic experience is the peaceful transfer of power. It reflects our collective will to uphold democratic ideals and serves as a beacon of hope across the continent. Yet, this achievement should not overshadow the ongoing challenges we face.
Despite democratic progress, Nigeria grapples with corruption, insecurity, and economic instability—challenges that weaken public trust and hinder national development. Corruption, in particular, siphons off resources meant for public good, while insecurity stifles investment, innovation, and growth.
To confront these issues, we must strengthen our institutions. Prioritizing transparency, accountability, and rule of law through judicial reforms and an independent electoral commission is critical. Civic engagement must also be encouraged to deepen democratic participation at all levels.
Nigeria’s future depends on robust economic policies that empower citizens. Economic diversification, support for entrepreneurship, and strategic investments in infrastructure and human capital are vital.
Education, in particular, plays a foundational role in our democratic evolution. An informed citizenry is essential for meaningful participation in governance and societal transformation. We must invest in education at all levels to create a knowledgeable and empowered population.
Promoting Unity and Tackling Insecurity
National unity remains central to our democratic success. We must bridge ethnic and religious divides and foster a sense of shared purpose. Tolerance, inclusion, and mutual respect must guide our actions.
Addressing insecurity requires a multi-pronged strategy: enhancing the capacity of security forces, supporting community-based efforts, and addressing socio-economic disparities that fuel unrest. Collaborative approaches involving government, civil society, and local communities are crucial.
Ending Poverty Through Inclusive Growth
Tackling poverty demands targeted interventions—from education and vocational training to entrepreneurship and rural development. Social safety nets, access to healthcare, and improved infrastructure must be prioritized to lift millions out of poverty and foster inclusive growth.
Democracy Day is more than a remembrance—it is a call to action. It is an opportunity to reflect on our progress, confront our shortcomings, and commit to building a brighter, more inclusive future.
Nigeria’s potential is immense. With our vibrant youth, abundant resources, and unyielding spirit, we can overcome any obstacle. By embracing democratic values and working together with determination, we can shape a Nigeria that serves the hopes and aspirations of all its people.
As we mark this Democracy Day, let us recommit to the ideals of justice, equity, and good governance. Let us build a future where democracy delivers real benefits for every Nigerian. The journey is far from over—but with unity and resilience, Nigeria can do better, and we will achieve greatness together.
