As Nigeria marks the anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election—a defining moment in our democratic journey—the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) mourns the erosion of the ideals that this day represents. The annulled election, widely acclaimed as a genuine reflection of the people’s will, was silenced by military fiat. Yet, it ignited a resilient quest for democratic governance. Today, however, the legacy of that noble struggle is under threat—not from the military, but from those elected to protect democracy.
June 12 embodies the people’s collective aspiration for a transparent, inclusive, and just political system. Unfortunately, over the years, this vision has been steadily undermined by leaders who place personal ambition above democratic principles. Corruption has become institutionalized, diminishing public trust and reducing governance to a self-serving enterprise. Electoral malpractices—characterized by violence, voter suppression, and manipulation—continue to compromise the legitimacy of elections. The unresolved irregularities of the 2023 general elections, for which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to offer a credible explanation, exemplify this crisis. These actions betray the spirit of June 12 and reduce democracy to an empty ritual.
Equally concerning is the increasing tilt toward authoritarianism. The unconstitutional suspension of a democratically elected Governor and members of the House of Assembly in Rivers State is a stark violation of democratic norms. Even more disturbing is the politicization of the electoral commission through the appointment of partisan individuals, a move that threatens the integrity and independence of future elections.
These actions dishonor the sacrifices made by heroes of the June 12 movement and erode the fundamental values of accountability, transparency, and citizen empowerment. They signal a dangerous descent into autocracy and represent a blatant mockery of the very essence of June 12.
CUPP calls for immediate and decisive steps to restore the sanctity of our democratic institutions. We demand a full and transparent audit of the 2023 elections and a halt to all forms of political violence and electoral fraud. We strongly condemn the anti-democratic actions in Rivers State and call for the reinstatement of legitimate, elected officials. Furthermore, we urge the removal of partisan elements from the electoral commission to safeguard its neutrality and credibility.
June 12 is not merely a date on the calendar—it is a solemn reminder of our collective struggle and sacrifice for a government that reflects the will of the people. It is a symbol of hope, resistance, and resilience. To reduce it to mere ceremonial observance, while democratic values are trampled daily, is to betray its true meaning.
We urge all Nigerians to rise in defense of our democracy. Reclaim your voice. Demand accountability. Resist corruption, impunity, and authoritarianism. Let us together renew our commitment to the ideals of June 12 and build a nation where democracy is not just declared—but lived.
