Lagos, Nigeria – Dangote Petroleum Refinery has publicly expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for intervening in the recent industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), which threatened to disrupt the nation’s energy sector.

Presidential Intervention Averts Crisis

In a statement released on Sunday, the refinery described President Tinubu’s involvement as pivotal in restoring stability. The leadership credited his decisive action, facilitated through senior government officials and ministers, for calming tensions and averting a potential shutdown of critical operations.

Last week, PENGASSAN staged strikes across several oil and gas installations, accusing Dangote Refinery of unlawfully terminating about 800 union-affiliated workers. Following federal government mediation, the union suspended the strike on Wednesday, allowing normal operations to resume.

“Dangote Refinery is grateful to President Bola Tinubu for his timely intervention, which helped curb the disruptive actions of PENGASSAN,” the statement read.

Government Officials Recognised for Efforts

The refinery highlighted the contributions of key government figures, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, DSS Director-General Adeola Ajayi, and NIA Director-General Mohammed Mohammed. Cabinet members such as Labour Minister Dr. Mohammed Dingyadi, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Budget Minister Senator Abubakar Bagudu, and Minister of State for Labour Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha were also acknowledged for their roles in the resolution.

Appreciation for Nigerians and Workforce

Dangote Refinery extended thanks to Nigerians for their public support during the crisis, noting that citizen encouragement strengthened the company’s resolve.

“To Nigerians of all walks of life, your support was humbling and overwhelming,” the statement added.

The refinery also commended its employees for maintaining operational continuity throughout the unrest, emphasizing that the strength of Dangote Group lies in its workforce’s dedication.

Safeguarding National Interests

While noting that certain individuals had attempted to undermine the company’s progress, Dangote Refinery reaffirmed its commitment to protecting national economic stability and promoting fair employment practices. The company also praised the judiciary for upholding court orders and ensuring the rule of law was respected during the dispute.

Looking Ahead

Concluding the statement, the refinery reiterated its dedication to national service and industrial growth, pledging to continue producing petroleum products for Nigerians despite challenges from detractors.

The PENGASSAN strike marked one of several tensions between the refinery and industry unions, which previously included disagreements over supply and pricing. The swift government-led resolution prevented a major disruption to Nigeria’s fuel supply.
