The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its crackdown on fuel smuggling, seizing 199,495 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Adamawa State under Operation Whirlwind. This decisive action highlights the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economy from economic saboteurs.
Customs CGC Condemns Fuel Smuggling
During a briefing in Yola, Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi condemned the persistent smuggling of petroleum products, calling it a direct attack on Nigeria’s energy sector.
“Despite the well-articulated economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration aimed at stabilizing the energy sector, some unpatriotic elements remain determined to undermine these efforts through complex smuggling operations,” Adeniyi said.
Intelligence-Driven Seizures
Adeniyi revealed that intelligence-led operations by the Adamawa/Taraba Command led to the interception of fuel smugglers using tankers, jerry cans, and drums to move fuel across the border. The confiscated products have a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦199.5 million.
He detailed the smugglers’ tactics, including:
Clandestine river crossings at Dasin Waterways
Illegal storage facilities near border towns
Unauthorized dispensing points for concealing fuel
“These economic saboteurs are determined to inflict hardship on law-abiding Nigerians, but let it be clear, the Nigeria Customs Service remains resolute in its mandate to protect our national economy,” he declared.
Targeting Key Smuggling Routes
The operation focused on major smuggling routes, including Mova, Dasin, the Galamba-Song axis, and the Mubi-Maiha corridor. Adeniyi reassured Nigerians that the NCS would continue refining its strategies, boosting intelligence gathering, and strengthening collaboration with security agencies.
“There will be no safe haven for fuel smugglers within our operational areas,” he emphasized.
Call for Public Support
Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs Hussain Ejibunu commended Adeniyi’s leadership and the dedication of Customs officers. He urged the public to report suspicious activities to security agencies, emphasizing that collective efforts are crucial in tackling fuel smuggling.
