The Lagos State Police arrested Alabi Quadri, a teenager from Lagos, after a street fight in Amukoko. Quadri, known for receiving money from Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 elections, was detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre. However, a public outcry and a lack of evidence led to his release on April 17, 2025.

On January 22, 2025, a violent clash broke out in Amukoko between groups of youths. The fight caused widespread panic, injuries, and damage to both public and private property. Some passersby were also robbed in the chaos. Police quickly launched an investigation.

During the investigation, victims identified the perpetrators. Police arrested Quadri and four others in connection with the violence and charged them in court. They were remanded in detention while awaiting further legal proceedings.

Wrongful Charges and Release

After several months in detention, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) reviewed the case and found no evidence to support the armed robbery charge against Quadri. As a result, the Lagos Magistrate Court discharged him on April 17, 2025.

Public Support and Legal Action

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who represented Quadri, confirmed the teenager’s release. Effiong noted that the charge was baseless and that the DPP had no evidence to back it. Following his release, Nigerians raised over N3 million in just two hours to help Quadri and his family relocate due to threats to their safety.

Peter Obi, who had previously supported Quadri, promised to provide additional assistance. He also called for justice during a meeting with the teenager in Lagos on April 18, 2025.

This case highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting individuals’ rights. It also underscores the need for a thorough investigation before making arrests. The public’s support for Quadri has brought attention to his wrongful detention, and many now call for further scrutiny of his case.
