Three officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) are recovering in a hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds during a raid in the Jahi area of Abuja on Thursday night. The officers were part of a team that carried out a surveillance-led operation at an uncompleted building in the NNPC area of Jahi.
According to a statement by Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters, the raid resulted in the recovery of significant quantities of illicit drugs, including 74 bottles of codeine, 10 liters of codeine syrup, 48 grams of tramadol, 4.9 kilograms of skunk (a cannabis strain), and five Android phones.
Gunmen Ambush NDLEA Officers During Exit
However, as the NDLEA team was exiting the site, they came under gunfire from armed assailants. Three officers were injured in the attack: one suffered a gunshot wound to the rib, while two others were shot in the back and leg. The officers were initially stabilized at the Police Clinic in Garki before being transferred to the National Hospital Abuja for further treatment.
NDLEA Chairman Vows to Bring Attackers to Justice
In response, NDLEA Chairman, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa, expressed his gratitude to the staff at the Police Clinic for their quick response and care. He also personally contacted the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital to oversee the treatment of the injured officers. Marwa, who is currently in Kano for official duties, spoke with the officers on the phone to wish them a speedy recovery. He assured them that the NDLEA would utilize all available resources and collaborate with other security agencies to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for the attack.
