By Evang. (Engr) Chinedu Jude Eloka, Outgoing Assistant National Youth Leader, Labour Party
The Labour Party (LP) will soon unveil a National Interim Committee (NIC) to oversee preparations for its 2025 National Convention. This move follows the expiration of the National Caretaker Committee’s tenure on March 3, 2025.
The outgoing National Caretaker Committee (NCC), which includes members from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), had been managing party affairs under the leadership of Sen. Nenadi Usman and Sen. Darlington Nwokocha. This transition aligns with the party’s constitution and reinforces its commitment to internal democracy.
A Roadmap to New Leadership
The Labour Party’s leadership transition follows this timeline:
National Interim Caretaker Committee (NICC) – 3 months
- National Caretaker Committee (NCC) – 6 months
- National Interim Committee (NIC) – 3 months
After completing this process, the NIC will conduct the National Convention, where new party leaders will be elected. Additionally, the committee will organize state congresses and delegate elections to ensure a smooth transition.
Strengthening Party Structures
To unify the party, the NIC will appoint State Congress Organizing Committees. These committees will collaborate with Congress Steering Committees at ward, local government, and state levels. Their goal is to harmonize party structures, encourage cooperation among different factions, and create a lasting framework. While some members may leave due to political differences, this process is expected to strengthen party unity.
Delegates and the National Convention
The National Convention will focus on:
- Electing National Working Committee (NWC) members
- Nominating the Board of Trustees (BOT)
- Selecting the party’s Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates
Delegates, elected during state congresses, will play a crucial role in selecting new party leaders. Their inclusion ensures diverse representation and promotes national unity.
Interim Leadership and Zoning Formula
The NLC Political Commission, in partnership with the NLC National Administrative Council, will appoint an Interim National Chairman and an Interim National Secretary. Both will be selected from the NWC members elected at the 2019 National Convention in Akwanga, Nasarawa State. Following the LP’s zoning arrangement, the Interim National Chairman will come from either of the two Deputy National Chairmen (North or South).
The Future of Labour Party Leadership
After the 2025 National Convention, the newly elected leadership will serve the following terms:
- State Executive Committees – 3 years
- National Officers – 4 years
As the Labour Party prepares for this crucial transition, members and stakeholders must actively participate. Their involvement will shape the party’s future and strengthen its democratic foundation.
Labour Party! Forward Ever! Backward Never!
