As the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child 2025, the United Nations POLAC Peace Consul and Secretary General of the Board of Trustees, H.E. Ambassador Bishop Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, has urged global stakeholders to renew their commitment to empowering girls on the frontlines of crisis. This year’s theme, “The Girl I Am, the Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,” celebrates the courage, resilience, and leadership of girls who continue to drive change despite facing adversity.

The theme for the International Day of the Girl Child 2025 underscores the power and resilience of girls confronting crisis situations. It highlights their essential role as leaders and advocates for their rights, equality, and well-being.

This focus aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). The International Day of the Girl Child 2025 serves as a reminder that empowering girls is key to building a more just and inclusive world.

Empowering Girls in Crisis

Girls affected by crisis face immense challenges, including poverty, displacement, and gender-based violence. Yet, they consistently demonstrate strength and leadership.

“Girls are not just victims of crisis; they are agents of change,” said H.E. Ambassador Bishop Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies. “We must invest in their education, health, and well-being to help them reach their full potential.”

Through the International Day of the Girl Child 2025, UN POLAC emphasizes the need for targeted action and inclusive policies that support girls in vulnerable communities.

Investing in Girls’ Future

Investing in girls’ education, health, and empowerment drives progress across societies. By providing access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, girls can rise as changemakers and innovators.

These investments advance global development and support the achievement of SDG 4, SDG 5, and SDG 10. The International Day of the Girl Child 2025 calls on leaders to make such investments a global priority.

Call to Action

On this International Day of the Girl Child 2025, UN POLAC calls on governments, organizations, and individuals to champion girls’ empowerment and leadership.
Leaders are urged to:

Protect girls’ rights: Safeguard girls’ safety and dignity in crisis situations.

Provide education and skills: Guarantee access to quality education and skill-building opportunities.

Amplify girls’ voices: Create platforms for girls to express themselves and lead initiatives in their communities.

Message

“On this International Day of the Girl Child 2025, we recognize the strength and potential of girls everywhere. Together, we must create a world where every girl thrives, free from discrimination, violence, and marginalization,” said H.E. Ambassador Bishop Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies.

As we commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child 2025, let us honor girls on the frontlines of crisis. By empowering them through education, leadership opportunities, and social inclusion, we build a stronger, fairer, and brighter future for all.
