Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has revealed that ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar is preparing to exit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Okowa, who ran as Atiku’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election under the PDP, recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday, Okowa confirmed he informed Atiku of the decision to hold critical stakeholders’ meetings before his defection.
“I did communicate with him that we were going to have leadership meetings, and the outcome would determine our next move because we were no longer comfortable with the PDP,” Okowa said.
He added, “From our conversations, I know he is already on his way out of the PDP, and that’s something Nigerians are aware of.”
The revelation comes as Atiku, along with Labour Party’s Peter Obi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, announced a coalition on 20 March 2023. The group aims to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, fuelling speculation about a major opposition realignment.
