FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has criticised former Rivers State governor and ADC presidential running mate Rotimi Amaechi over comments linking his mother’s death to the economic policies of the Bola Tinubu administration, describing the remarks as politically motivated.
Wike’s comments followed Amaechi’s recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, which he linked to the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death.
Amaechi had alleged that the rising cost of living under the Tinubu administration made it difficult for him to afford the medication his mother needed before her death.

However, Wike dismissed the claim, describing it as an attempt to turn a personal tragedy into a political issue.
Speaking to supporters on Saturday, the FCT minister questioned Amaechi’s explanation, noting that the former governor had occupied several prominent political positions over the years.
Wike pointed to Amaechi’s time as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor of the state and later minister, arguing that he had held influential positions for many years.
He also questioned why Amaechi could not obtain financial assistance from family members or friends if the cost of his mother’s medication had become a challenge.
According to Wike, Amaechi’s decision to publicly attribute his mother’s death to the Federal Government’s policies was unfortunate.
The minister further argued that the presence of prominent personalities and private jets at the burial contradicted Amaechi’s claim that he lacked access to people who could have assisted him financially.
Wike maintained that Amaechi’s account was aimed at generating public sympathy, insisting that Nigerians would not accept the explanation.
He described the development as an unfortunate attempt to bring politics into a deeply personal family tragedy.
