The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has withdrawn its backing for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Naija News reports that the National Publicity Secretary of the Wike faction, Jungudo Mohammed, confirmed this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.

Mohammed emphasized that the faction will not support Tinubu, insisting that the PDP will present its own presidential candidate. He stated:

“We are not supporting President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 general election. We will do everything to field our own candidate.

“I appeal to Nigerians to give us time between now and our primaries.

“All rumours suggesting we are backing the APC or acting as an appendage of the APC are baseless. Time will expose these falsehoods, which are aimed at discrediting either the PDP or Minister Wike.”

The statement appears at odds with earlier suggestions that Wike’s faction might support Tinubu.

Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde claimed that Wike intends to position the PDP in favour of Tinubu for 2027. Speaking on Sunday during a meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed in Bauchi, Makinde accused Wike of deepening the PDP crisis, saying that members aligned with the Minister-backed faction have agreed to support Tinubu.

He said:

“I was in a meeting with Wike and Mr President, and Wike promised to hold the PDP for Mr President in 2027. Anyone moving with Wike and his group has agreed to back President Tinubu in the 2027 election.”
