The political turbulence in the Lagos State House of Assembly took a dramatic turn on Thursday as former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa made a surprise appearance at the legislative complex, flanked by heavily armed security personnel.

Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, had not been publicly seen at the Assembly since his ousting. His return, marked by a show of force, saw his supporters gathered at the entrance of the complex, chanting in solidarity with the lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I.

Obasa’s Controversial Ouster

The former Speaker’s removal came after more than two-thirds of the Assembly voted him out over alleged misconduct and other offenses. His then-deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first woman to hold the position in Lagos State.

Following her emergence, Meranda sought the backing of the state’s political elite, including the influential Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). She also met with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to solidify her leadership.

Obasa, who had held the Speaker’s seat since 2015, rejected his impeachment, insisting he remained the rightful leader of the Assembly. He argued that due process was not followed, claiming he was out of the country when the vote took place.

Assembly Complex on Edge

The crisis escalated on February 17, 2025, when tensions flared between security operatives and legislative staff, leading to an indefinite adjournment of the Assembly’s sitting. Thirty-six lawmakers loyal to Meranda reaffirmed their confidence in her leadership, declaring Obasa’s removal final.

Adding to the political intrigue, Meranda’s aide, Victor Ganzallo, accused the police of withdrawing all security details assigned to the Speaker and the Assembly complex without explanation. He questioned whether the move was politically motivated, raising concerns about the safety of lawmakers.

“The timing of the withdrawal, combined with the hostile actions of the former Speaker and his associates, raises questions. Is this a strategy to destabilize the current administration?” Ganzallo stated.

The Lagos State Police Command has yet to issue an official response, with spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin stating that Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh will address the matter in due course.

As the power struggle continues, political observers are closely watching how the crisis unfolds in Nigeria’s most economically significant state.
